Where do cats like to be petted
Cats have their own preference on which parts of their body they like to be petted. Some parts are totally off limits like the belly and tail. This helps in human cat interaction and building a loving bond with your cat.
- Under the chin — this is the most common area where cats like to be petted.
- Around the eyes, ears and cheeks — this areas are best to give them a good scratch but not too hard though
- Near the base of the tail
These areas have scent glands on them which is why you notice that is also where cats will greet other cats smelling them around the same areas. When we humans pet them around those areas, cats are more welcoming to us. Those scent glands will transfer their scent to us which make them more comfortable around a familiar scent.
Stroking or petting their tail is not a good idea as this will make them feel provoked and keep their guard up and risk a scratch or bite. The best way is still to keep petting at the areas with the scent glands.
